Bathurst airport is situated just 9km’s from the well known suburb of Bathurst in the state of New South Wales. Bathurst, approximately 200km west of Sydney is a regional centre within the state, with a population greater than 30,000, it is the oldest inland settlement in Australia. Bathurst is extremely well known for the Mount Panorama motor racing circuit, which is the venue for Bathurst’s 12 Hour motor race which takes place each February. Additionally the Bathurst 1000 motor race is held at Mount Panorama each October. Both these events draw thousands of spectators to the area for days at a time and is beneficial to the town financially.
Bathurst is home to an unusual collection of house museums which represented different periods of history from first settlement to the 1970s. Central Bathurst is host to the Australian Fossil & Mineral Museum, which houses the Somerville Collection of fossils and minerals, and features Australia's only complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton. The Somerville Collection also consists of one of the largest collections of tourmaline in the Southern Hemisphere. |
