Canberra International Airport is loacted about 10 minutes from Canberra CBD near the semi-rurual suburb Pialligo, but due to traffic congestion the travel times may be longer. The airport serves domestic destinations, but there are no longer international services from Canberra. However, the airport does handle both diverted international and domestic flights from Melbourne and Sydney Airport. Canberra Airport was built up from an old airstrip created in the 1920s and was first used as an Royal Australian Air Force base |
| with a small area leased out for civil aviation. In more recent years the airport has been upgraded several times and in 2010 a new terminal with 6 aerobridges, 32 check-in counters, 2500 car parks and three times the baggage capacity will be completed. |
