Exmouth is a small town in the north-west of Western Australia and it is located about 1300 kilometres from Perth and about 3400 kilometres from Darwin. The local airport is located near Learmonth and was originally established by the Royal Australian Air Force. However, it is not only the airport that has a close connection with the armed forces; the location where the town of Exmouth is situated was initially a military base following the retreat from Java during the Second World War. The allied needed a forward base and used the base to refuel submarines before it grew into the town it is today. Later, in 1962 a town was established and currently, Exmouth relies more on tourism than the army to survive. During the peak tourism season the town’s population triples from about 2000 to over 6000 which further highlights how important this industry is for this small Western Australia town. |
