Victoria is situated in the south-east corner of Australia and it is the smallest mainland state in Australia. The state of Victoria has the second largest population in Australia and is the most densely populated. Discovery of gold in 1851 led this humble farming community into a period of rapid growth and quickly transformed Victoria into a leading financial centre. Initially gold was discovered near Ballarat, which led to further discoveries at other sites close by. Consequently this resulted in one of the largest gold rushes in history. After this first discovery Victoria’s population grew over a ten year period from just over 75,000 to close to 550,000. During 1850 and 1860 it was estimated that Victoria was supplying about 1/3 of the world’s gold. Today the importance of gold has diminished significantly due to Victoria’s capital Melbourne taking over as the most important city in Victoria. Melbourne is now home to about 70% of Victorians, with a reputation of being the financial, cultural and sporting capital of Australia.
